What is here? Here.fm is a website and app that describes itself as 'a fun, quirky, and personalized virtual meeting space.' Founded in 2020 with a $2.9 million seed round, Here offers a new way to communicate with friends and strangers online. The most similar app I can think of to compare Here to is Discord; only instead of servers, you have rooms. Each room has a page you can move around with interactive media, as well as a main chat. Like Discord, it has video chat, direct messages, screen share DMs and profiles. There are a lot of notable differences, though. How it worksHere's a quick summary of how it works: you create a 'room' (similar to a server). You now have a virtual space where you can add a background and decorate it with GIFs and text, or just choose a ready-made template. You can also add interactive embedded media including a Youtube video or playlist, Twitch stream and games like Scribble.io, chess and Connect 4. There are also public rooms you can join. Each room has a main chat box, and you can add other ones as well. Other things you can add include, but are not limited to, a drawing board, to-do list, timer stopwatch and poll. Each room has a link you can share with friends so they can join. As the host, you can control other members' permissions, including mic, camera and notifications. As I said, there are also public rooms, but this is still in beta. The obvious problem with this is that people might abuse this and there are no real age restrictions, but you can moderate the room by adding others as hosts, banning, kicking and reporting other members. |
