Guest post by Moinul Karim The pandemic has revolutionized the way of teaching and studying. Almost every student is undergoing their respective course online classes. Based on personal experience, I've found that the biggest difficulty students face is the inability to concentrate during online classes. So, here is some advice on how to not get distracted in an online class. Start the day fresh Don't skip breakfast. Find time for a bit of exercise. Take a bath. These activities will give you an energy boost throughout the day. The first few hours of your day are when you have the most positive energy; try to start the day with on a high. Get organized Whether your school materials are online or offline, keep them organized. This will save you time when trying to find notes and other materials. Make sure that you have everything with you before your online class starts. Finding or trying to look for items during online classes will just going to distract you further. Creating shortcuts on your computer will also help you access folders easily. Try to sit down at your desk at least 10 minutes before each online class to be prepared mentally and physically. Find a comfortable study area. Make sure your place of study is comfortable. Ensure the room is well lit to avoid eye strain that could cause headaches or drowsiness. Avoid too comfy areas (bed, sofa, etc.) because it will probably make you sleep. A good study space is essential for a good online class session. Here's how to make your study area aesthetic and functional. Know your distractions Once we identify our distraction, we can create a defence mechanism against it. We can not improve what we can not measure. Once you know what hinders you, that is when you can work against it. Take a pen and a paper and find all distractions that disturb you while in an online class. Avoid distractions Turn off the TV and cell phone. Put a 'do not disturb sign on your door. Set your messenger status to "unavailable." Close browser windows. Log off from social websites. Don't play the music that will distract you. You can also use apps like Forest and Freedom that help you to block distracting websites and apps. Apply the "Pause" technique You are in the middle of an important online class, your phone beeps, and you realize that it is a message. Now your whole focus went for a toss. If you meet distractions at any time of an online session, pause for a second ask yourself – "Is this going to distract me from the most important task at hand? Our minds always keep on rambling in the worries of the past and anxieties of the future; a simple question can bring us back to our place. Practising mindfulness is going to help us avoid the distractions in our hands. Take a Break Do not push yourself to focus for more than 2 hours straight. Find time to relax. Play a game, talk to a friend, go for a walk, eat fresh fruits, and drink plenty of water. Using the breaks between your online classes are important. It would be best if you used them to divert your focus to something else and stop thinking about online classes as a whole. Use offline tools Staring at the computer screen for hours makes your mind go numb, so try using physical tools like pens, paper, books or printouts now and then to reduce the monotony. Also, try using apps that also have offline versions of them. Try to take handwritten notes rather than digital notes because digital notes can lead to further distractions while using the device. Wrapping up In the present context, online classes are just as important as offline classes. They could become the future of education. It isn't easy, but we need to adapt to these conditions by using these strategies. Otherwise, we are going to fall behind others. We do not know when the pandemic will be over once and for all, so we must prepare ourselves and prepare for what is in front of us.
