From curries and sweets to rope and roof tiles, the nuts, leaves and wood of the Sri Lankan coconut palm are used for just about everything. It is also used for making colander coconut shell spoons. Here's how:
First, the nuts are plucked from the treetops by highly skilled coconut pickers. Then the empty shells are shaped and polished to make the spoons in this shape, while the palm’s trunk lends its hard, durable wood for the handles. Carved by hand, each spoon has its own unique shape and size, and over time they will pick up lovely signs of use. The colander spoon is used for lifting dumplings or vegetables from a boiling pot, the large and small ladles for curries and stews, and serve food such as rice.
